Many people forget that the 9-11 attacks also involved the Pentagon, which for decades, was the largest office building in the world and is still a symbol of US military power since World War 2. My guest, Joe Duffus, has been a frequent guest on this podcast. In 2001, we and several others shared an office in the tallest building in Northern Virginia (only a mile and a half from the Pentagon and just over a narrow river to Washington DC, our nation’s capital). Through floor to ceiling picture windows on the 24th floor, we mutually witnessed that morning's attack on the Pentagon, which killed 184 people.

On the 23rd anniversary of the US’ greatest foreign attack since Pearl Harbor, we look back. Part 1 focuses on the World Trade Center attacks. Joined by seasoned guests – the New Yorker brothers Jason and Rob (famous for our 7/4 Nathan’s Hot Dog episode) – we dive deep into their experiences on the day itself and – then flash forward - what New Yorkers feel about the event today…over 2 decades later. “The Wizard of Oz”, 85th Anniversary Celebration – Complete Episode

America’s favorite movie (and other countries too) is celebrating a milestone birthday. So why a scandal? Well, most people don’t know that the production of this cherished family film was fraught with many bizarre difficulties and life-threatening events for certain actors. Just a sample - Margaret Hamilton, the actress that played the Wicked Witch, received 3^rd degree burns in her fire scenes that required 6 weeks of hospitalization. The 123 small people playing the “Munchkins” went more than a little crazy in Hollywood/LA with the money they were paid. And (then) 15 year old star, Judy Garland, would get hooked on the narcotics, MGM studio doctors prescribed to her. A life long addiction that resulted in her untimely death at only age 47. Great, beloved movie, yes – but with an inexplicable legacy of terrible behind-the scenes calamities.  Anuradha and I cover it all for you!

Panic At The Amusement Park

Who doesn’t love going to an amusement park in the summer with their kids or grandchildren? BUT – are the rides safe and are ‘express lanes’ fair and in the spirit of our democratic nation? But where did these parks come from in the first place? We send our co-host on an all-expense paid trip to one of America’s favorite parks – to investigate first hand. Back in 1955, an entrepreneur named Walt Disney made a crazy investment that everyone on Wall Street advised him not to do. He put almost every dime he had on the line ... and held his breath. It was an early theme park called, “Disneyland”. Despite early dire projections, Disney’s big gamble paid off a 10 thousand times over and so have its many sister parks. Taking Disney’s example, hundreds of theme parks, around the world, have now, collectively, become multi-trillion $$$ dollar businesses, 60+ years later. Yet…do dire scandals lie simmering beneath these places of... so-called, family happiness?

The Greatest Filmmaker You Probably Never Heard Of – ROGER CORMAN

Filmmaker, Roger Corman, died peacefully at the ripe old age of 98, this May.  Known as "The Pope of Pop Cinema", or "The King of Schlock", he was a trailblazer in the world of independent film. Among the hundreds of features directed/produced by Corman, many were ultra-low budget films that later attracted a cult following, such as “The Little Shop of Horrors”  and “Death Race 2000”. Paradoxically, he simultaneously introduced prestige foreign “art” directors to US audiences like: Bergmann, Fellini, Kurasawa, Truffaut, and others. He gave many house hold name directors their first jobs: Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Jonathan Demme, Peter Bogdanovich, Joe Dante, John Sayles, and James Cameron. He also launched actors like: Jack Nicolson, Robert DeNiro, Sylvestor Stallone, Peter Fonda, and many more. We dive deep into a remarkable 54 year career that dramatically shaped the global movie industry more than any other single person.
