Our 2023 co-host, ELLIE, a Girl Scout from Kindergarten to High School senior, rose to the highest rank in the GSA organization. Now a millennial young woman, Ellie looks back at her decade+ experiences and shares a very CANDID insider view on the 3 mo/year $800 million dollar cookie industrial complex. BTW, WE LOVE AND SUPPORT THE GIRLS! … it’s just some of the adults in the mix whose motives may not be entirely spotless.

America’s Auschwitz? – Andersonville Prison (1865)

Those of us lucky enough to live in the great USA, prefer to think of ourselves as good and moral people. But are there terrible secrets in our country’s past we prefer not to think of?

Every 5^th grader knows the American Civil War (1861-1865) was the bloodiest military conflict in the USA’s 250 history. But beyond battlefield casualties, the real atrocities that occurred back then often don’t appear in many current history textbooks. Case in point, the ANDERSONVILLE PRISONER OF WAR PRISON – a camp designed for 10,000 prisoners that eventually housed 45,000. In only 14 months 13,000 Union prisoners died of disease, starvation, exposure … or outright torture and murder. Unlike many other conflicts, the American Civil War was not a war against unknown people, 10,000 miles away, that neither side could truly comprehend in any cultural/social way. This war was American vs American, brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor.

No one loves Christmas more than your friends at Scandal Sheet. But that doesn’t mean we can’t explore some obvious historical inconsistencies. Right? For example, why is Christmas celebrated on December 25? Only 2 of the 4 Gospels in the Christian New Testament even discuss the birth of the infant Jesus and NEITHER MENTIONS A DATE. But the Gospels do give us clues that the birthday was more likely in the spring or summer - and NOT winter. So, why 12/25? "Star Trek” Turns 60 – Still Boldly Going?

After a very modest beginning in 1966, the original “Star Trek” TV series was canceled by NBC after only 3 seasons and 79 episodes. But it found new life in syndication and gradually became a cultural phenomenon. It went onto spawn 13 feature length movies between 1979-2016 (new one coming soon). It has also hatched 12 additional TV series (2 still running) that have collectively produced over 900 episodes (and counting). How does a TV show that lasted only half the seasons as one of its 1960’s TV contemporaries, “Mister Ed”, (about a talking horse) become a - still growing - $20 billion dollar franchise?

Anuradha and Thad are joined by returning guest host and “super fan” Jim Maurer to dive deep into the 60-year legacy of “Star Trek”. How did this nearly forgotten show rise from the ashes and become a surprise sleeper hit? We explore the groundbreaking nature of the show and its enduring influence on modern entertainment. Spatchcocking A Turkey

I get it. You’re saying – what the h**l is ‘spatchcocking’ and is that the BEST name the cooking marketing genius’s of Madison Avenue could come up with? I’m with you on that. This technique can easily be used for chicken and other poultry. It reduces cooking time by at least half and the results are an evenly cooked bird. Remember, roast TURKEY isn’t a one day a year entrée – NO!. It ties with ham as a favorite Christmas Day offering and is of course delicious throughout the fall/winter and the year.

Thanksgiving Special: The Salem Witches – Were The Witches Trippin’??

Why did the horrific 1692 Salem witch trials and subsequent executions happen? Many Americans don’t know that Salem, Massachusetts was founded by numerous people that were part of the original Christian Puritans (aka the “Pilgrims”) that founded the Plymouth, Massachusetts colony. The same folks that celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day in 1621 with their indigenous friends/partners. However, many Puritans left Plymouth in 1626, as it did not have a practical harbor, and moved 60 miles south to a place with a GREAT natural harbor that they called Salem. Salem and nearby Boston succeeded enormously as commercial colonies while Plymouth gradually faded from relevance. But in 1692 – in a series of bizarre and inexplicable actions - Salem authorities accused and imprisoned over 20% of their population, executing many and leaving many others to die in jail. How could these very conservative, “reformed” Christians - Biblical New Testament literalists - prosecute this insanely gross level of genocide on members of their very own community? Was the then unknown rye grain fungus ‘ergot’, a key ingredient in modern LSD (i.e. ‘Acid’), a contributing factor in the behavior issues that sparked the hysteria? Anuradha and I will guide you through this rarely told - but very informative story.
